Friedrich Wilderness Park

We experienced a big rain recently, which unfortunately led to some trails being closed because of flooding and erosion. Despite that, we are happy to share that we did complete the Main Loop and another side trail loop, which I believe was called the watershed. Overall, it was a rewarding experience despite the weather challenges.

I took the Main loop to Restoration Way so I saw most of the park and I tried to take pictures of the landscape without houses or other edifices in the background but it wasn't easy. Most photos I took had houses or other buildings in them so I deleted them. For a hike in the city, it's nice, but I prefer trails that only have more nature in the background.

Amazing place that will make you say "I can't believe I'm still in San Antonio" or at least it made me say that. Best part of these trails is the graded system. The park has trails graded from 1 to 4 which pertains to there difficulty and accessibility. This helps you plan your hikes around your needs. The trails are also all quite short, I think the longest loop was about 3 miles but most average around 0.4 miles, so you can stack your hike length to be anywhere from 0.15 miles up to 10 miles if you want to do the whole park! I really enjoyed that higher rank did not mean the trails were less maintained. You can really tell the park's team really cares. One thing I do wish the park had was a place to fill water bottles. (If they already have this, then the signage was not clear.) So my recommendation would be to bring extra water just incase but I guess that's always a good idea. ♡

A surprisingly large, unique hiking spot. New Yorker here visiting friends and wanted to explore some hikes around San Antonio. Easy to find and drive to. Very clear mapping and trail markings. For me, a unique landscape (and apparently an international birding location- so take binoculars if you're into that stuff), and a decent hike. We did almost the entire outer loop, with a minor detour to Mill Path (we saw, and heard, the mill). Would recommend for both avid hikers and casual hikers. Accessible to wheelchair users with paved trails. Also has public parking and public restrooms.

We come here from time to time, and every hike feels like a new adventure! Depending on which path you take, the difficulty can range from light and scenic to a real workout (those inclines will humble you 😅). The trails are beautifully maintained, with peaceful views as you climb higher, and plenty of wildlife along the way. We love seeing families with their kids out here, soaking up nature together. It’s a great spot to clear your mind, get some fresh air, and reconnect with the outdoors. 🌿🥾
