(from Google)Taylor Mountain Regional Park is a scenic and expansive open space on the southeastern edge of Santa Rosa, California. It’s become a favorite for locals and visitors looking for panoramic views, exercise, and a connection with Sonoma County’s natural beauty. Here’s a comprehensive review based on multiple visits and a variety of experiences: Scenery & Atmosphere Taylor Mountain’s rolling hills and grassy meadows provide a classic Sonoma County landscape. The park offers sweeping views of Santa Rosa, Bennett Valley, and the Mayacamas Mountains, especially from higher elevations. Wildflowers bloom in spring, and the open terrain gives a real sense of space and tranquility. The park feels wild and unspoiled, yet is only minutes from downtown Santa Rosa. Trails & Activities The park features over five miles of multi-use trails for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and dog walking (leashed pets are welcome). The main trails, including the Western Trail and Eastern Trail, vary in steepness and length—offering everything from gentle strolls to more challenging climbs. The ascent to the summit is well worth the effort for its 360-degree views. Wildlife & Nature Taylor Mountain is home to deer, hawks, wild turkeys, coyotes, and a rich variety of birds and native plants. The open grasslands are ideal for birdwatching, and lucky visitors may spot raptors soaring overhead or grazing deer in the early morning or evening. Facilities & Accessibility The park has several trailheads (notably Kawana Terrace and Petaluma Hill Road) with parking lots, restrooms, and informational kiosks. Picnic tables are available near entrances, but there is limited shade—bring sun protection and plenty of water, especially on warmer days. Trails can be steep and uneven, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Trail maps are posted at entrances, and paths are clearly marked. Family-Friendliness Taylor Mountain is suitable for families with children who can handle moderate hiking. The open space is great for exploring, and the shorter loops offer opportunities for less strenuous walks. The wide trails and open vistas make it easy to keep an eye on young explorers. Areas for Improvement The park could benefit from more shaded rest areas and additional benches along the main trails. On hot days, the lack of tree cover can make hikes challenging. Some trail sections can get muddy after rain, so checking conditions ahead of time is wise. Conclusion Taylor Mountain Regional Park is a gem for outdoor enthusiasts, offering varied trails, spectacular views, and a sense of adventure close to the city. Whether you’re hiking to the summit, biking the loops, or enjoying a family picnic, the park delivers a memorable Sonoma County experience. It’s a must-visit for those seeking open space and natural beauty in the heart of the region.
$8 Parking A fun network of trails. Some trails are well maintained, some trails have improvised forks not represented on maps. Nice views of the santa rosa valley, nice forest canopy. Modular trails, you can hike 1 - 10+ mile loops.
Excellent place for a good hike and reaching the top is simply amazing, you can breathe fresh air
I appreciate the added trails to this mountain and thank you to the Sonoma County regional Parks for their work. I had not been here in a while as there were not many trails before. The views are always quite nice. Be mindful where you step as we almost stepped on a rattler today as it was basking in the sun. The gravel road up to the park has so many dips in it you have to drive extremely slow to traverse it safely. Plenty of parking spots.
Great park with well maintained trails shaded by beautiful oak trees. There is nice/moderate elevation gain on most trails so be prepared with some water & sunscreen if it’s warm out. The park is very popular especially on weekends and the parking lot fills up fast so get there early. Many people walking their dogs and a few mountain bikers as well.🤗
