Oldsmar Trail Head

This trail head would be an awesome place for a kayak ramp to be able to fish the Tarpon Canal or recreational kayak the canal. The small parking lot is right there. There was a nice kayak ramp at the south end of the trail but don’t know if it’s still there since the hurricanes. But it’s almost a 1/4 mile from the parking area.

It may be okay to bike but walking it was tiresome. I walked from the trailhead to the railroad crossing at Forest Lakes and back. Long, straight boring section at the beginning along the canal with no shade or benches. The trail doesn't have a lot of shade in general, so bring lots of water. Badly marked in multiple spots where you're not sure where the trail is. It was difficult to even find where the trail started because on Google Maps it incorrectly shows it starting more North. A long section of neighborhood sidewalk is counted as part of the trail. After the canal section, there's a small park with bathrooms, pavilions with benches, and a water fountain. I saw a pair of dolphins swimming in the canal. Trail seemed safe to me. I don't think I would walk this again, but if I did, I'd skip the tiresome canal section and start at the park after it.

We were looking forward to this trail after reading the good reviews. However, the lack of signage on this trail made riding it extremely frustrating. (We have cycled over 25 bike trails in FL in the past 2 months and this was the worst for directions). It goes by many parks and parts of the trail are pretty but it is very easy to get lost. Hopefully the new mayor will make it a priority to put up simple signs directing cyclists so that the beauty of this community can be enjoyed.

This is a good start to walk in Oldsmar. Not many parking places. I recommend walking to The Indian restaurant for a wonderful meal and back to the car.
