K-9 dog kennels is one of the best places every if your looking for a amazing staff and great service for you and your dogs. The young women who’s name is Abby was incredible, she treated my dogs like royalty. From the moment I walked in and saw the staffs smiling faces I knew my dog was going to be taken care of. The service is top-notch they went above and beyond to ensure my dog was taking care of and even went the extra mile to provide extra play time, comfy bed/blankets, and sending videos/pictures to show my dogs were settling in well. I without a doubt would continue driving the extra distance just for this amazing kennel where I know my dogs would be taken care of correctly.

I bought my two dogs (a beagle and a Yorkie mix) here from June 5th-9th. At first, this seemed like a reasonably priced facility that takes good care of the pets entrusted in their care. I was wrong. They have some shady business practices, in my opinion. For starters, I called weeks prior to confirm the dates I would be out of town and the rates they charge for boarding. On 3 different occasions following that call, I was quoted a single price that prompted my decision to leave my pets in their care. This price also turned out to be a lie. My issues were the following: 1. When I arrived home and went to pick up my dogs, I was quoted a price that was more than double what I was told prior. As it turns out, they'd completely disregarded the dates I put down and attempted to charge me for two additional days (6/3-6/9 instead of 6/5-6/9), and had crossed out the original dates on the sign in sheet. They only adjusted after I pointed this out. 2. I was told multiple times by Penny, the owner, that I would charged for exactly 3 days because I dropped them off on the afternoon of 6/5 and as long I picked them up prior to 3pm on 6/9, I wouldn't be charged for the extra day. On the day I picked them up, I called at 1:30 pm to indicate that I was on my way to get my pets. I was told by a young woman that I could not pick them up because no one would be there until 3- in direct conflict with what I was told prior. The young woman later accused me of lying about the price and "trying to get something for free" completely unprompted. Mind you, I'd offered to pay these people prorated for the days I was leaving my pets. This was part of a larger interaction of complete unprofessionalism and utter disrespect from this young woman. 3. I left my dogs with a bag of food, their leashes and harnesses, and a bed for my Yorkie mix. Upon pick up, the food had clearly barely been touched, and the bed was never returned. To be clear, I initially forgot their food at drop off and went back home to get it. They weren't there, so I called and was told that they were at lunch and to just leave it on the doorstep. The ring camera on the property would've captured this. Anyways, my beagle is noticeably thinner than he was at drop off, which leads me to believe that they were not taken care of as well this place purports to do. In conclusion, between the incredibly unprofessional behavior, the shady bookkeeping practices, the blatant lying about pricing, and the stealing from clients, I wouldn't recommend anyone who cares about their pets to leave them here. There are plenty of places around Springfield that genuinely care about boarding your pets, but this isn't one of them. Edit: The owner erroneously states that her attempting to overcharge me for days in which my pets were not boarded was a "handwriting issue." All necessary paperwork was handled at drop-off, and had there been illegible handwriting affecting the clarity of the specified dates, that issue would've been raised. The owner also states that we did not communicate arranged drop-off and pick-up times. This is also false. We communicated these things 3 weeks prior (The week of May 13th), again before drop-off, and once more at drop-off. Penny voiced understanding of our needs multiple times, only to turn around and say something different later. As other reviews here indicate, the lying and misrepresenting of their services is a consistent pattern of behavior for this business. Finally, as far as the unprofessional behavior, the condescending tone the owner used to suggest that we did not do our due diligence in ensuring our pets were safe and well-cared for is also one of the negative experiences that make this place so unwelcoming. Judging by my encounter with the young woman at the desk, it seems to be a family trait as well.

We had a wonderful experience boarding our dog here! Penny and Rick are amazing. Your dogs will be taken care of when you board here. Their prices are great as well. We had gotten back from our trip late and Rick was willing to go back after hours so we could pick up. They are very accommodating to you and your dogs needs. Definitely recommend and will use them again!

This is a bit delayed as I haven’t lived in Illinois for a few years BUT! When I did, we took our Remy to Rick and Penny for several years and never had a single problem. They were ALWAYS accommodating, kind, and amazing. Remy is a picky dog and doesn’t like just anyone. He LOVED them and I never felt bad about leaving him with them. He always had a great time. I wish we had a Rick and Penny here too. 10/10!

Spoke to Rick on 3/30/22 inquiring about boarding our 98 lb pit bull mix rescue for 3 weeks in June 22. He was very nice, but hesitant about the size and breed our dog. I agreed to send him pictures of our dog so he could take a look. I sent 12 pictures, Rick promptly called back and said he looks like a good ole boy. April 18, 2022, called the facility to see if I could bring the dog out to visit as I had the day off. Penny answered the phone and invited us out at 3:30pm. When my daughters and I arrived we politely waited until Penny could step away and speak with us. She takes one look at our dog asked if he was a pit, I replied, “yes some kind of mix.” She replied, “we don’t do pits!” Imagine my shock! I told her I sent pictures to Rick, he thought the dog would be fine. All she had to offer was, “I’m sorry.” The bottom line is that it is fine if you don’t want to care for my dog because of his breed. On the other hand, I was relying on Rick’s word, he even put me on the books for 3 weeks in June. I’m so grateful I had wherewithal to visit the facility instead of taking Rick’s word. Very unprofessional.
