(from Google)The building they are in is really great. The burnt ends were really good but the pulled pork was dry. The sauce was very good and really added flavor to the dry pork.
My family recently catered a Celebration of Life in our home and had the crew at Iron Rail cater it. They were punctual on their arrival and extremely efficient setting up the catered meal for 60 people. Andy Diegel was excellent to work with in the catering department. He was professional, courteous and communicated quickly and efficiently. The food was excellent. Burnt Ends, Brisket and Turkey were cooked to perfection. Mac N Cheese was excellent (as usual) and their other sides were great too! We bought some cookies and brownies to round things out and were pleasantly surprised by the quality and freshness of them. Overall, this was a top tier catering experience! Highly recommend!
Lunch crowd, busy but was seated right away. Our waitress worked hard being our waitress and also the bartender. Food took awhile to arrive. I just couldn’t believe they served me a sandwich with a thumb print. I wouldn’t expect me back. Happy that I wasn’t hungry. June of 2026 visit.
Iron Rails strikes you, right when you walk in, as a place that has it all together. The kind of place where you think, okay, someone here knows what they’re doing. Shiny brewing tanks gleaming in the back like stainless-steel trophies. A bright, clean restaurant up front. Country music humming softly in the background while TVs line a bar that’s front and center like the stage of the whole operation. The bathrooms are tidy. The staff are smiling. On the surface, it’s dialed in. However, that’s where it all ends. The food is lacking passion. The BBQ is overdone and uninspired. You can get better BBQ from a trailer at a gas station, and I mean that in the most respectful way possible to the people running those trailers, because they usually care a whole lot more. I had the burnt end chili and the mixed plate with ribs, chopped brisket, and potato salad served with a slice of toast. My party got a side of fries and the burnt end plate with slaw. The brisket was dry when it came out, dark and crusty on top of the pile and slightly less dry on the bottom. I had a hard time telling if it was pork or beef. The ribs were tender, sure, but the flavor just wasn’t really there. The chili also lacked flavor. There were maybe three pieces of burnt ends in my burnt end chili. It tasted like the kind of chili you’d spoon onto a hot dog at a ballgame. The star of the food show was the slaw. Delicious. Bright, tangy, creamy, and tasted fresh. It’s not a good sign when the star of the show is a side dish. The beer was decent, but nothing to write home about. An IPA was had, a pilsner, and a doppelbock. And honestly, that’s the frustrating part. This place looks like it should be great. You walk in thinking, hell yeah, this is gonna rip. The setup is all there, the tanks, the space, the energy. But the food just doesn’t bring it. BBQ should have swagger. It should taste like someone cared about it for hours. Instead, it felt like it was just going through the motions. I don’t say this lightly, but I wouldn’t come back for the BBQ. When the slaw is the most memorable thing on the table, something’s off. Topeka has to have more to offer than this. And I’m willing to bet it does, somewhere in this town there’s smoke rolling out back and someone who actually cares about what’s coming off the pit. I’ll keep looking.
Our first time there was on a Thursday afternoon when they were super busy at lunchtime. They did their best to make us comfortable while we waited for a table and they got us in relatively quickly. Both the items we tried were delicious. I had gotten the turkey apple brie sandwich, and I highly recommend it. It has bacon, Apples, Brie And the best part was, it doesn’t have deli slices. It is legit sliced turkey. Almost like it was off a roasted breast it was really really good. The staff all seemed friendly and they tried to take care of us in a timely manner. I told her at the end we were in a hurry and she got my to go order out and they were so nice. I highly suggest this restaurant.
