they had a cat spay deal going on 140 for spay two vaccines and microchip they even clipped her nails for me while she was asleep was so so worried about my baby and her incision is very neat and small looks like they did an amazing job the ladies at the desk and who took my kitty back were so so nice and explained everything very well ❤️

On June 9, 2026, I brought five kittens to Charleston Animal Society after previously communicating with them via email about placing the kittens into their adoption program. At no point did I describe these kittens as feral, indicate that they were feral, or bring them in for TNR services. My understanding, based on our communications, was that they were being surrendered for adoption. I dropped the kittens off around 10:00 a.m. At 12:33 p.m., I received a voicemail stating that 4 of the 5 kittens were being placed into the feral TNR program and that I would need to pick them up the following day. Naturally, I was shocked and confused. What made one kitten adoptable but the other four not? When I called seeking clarification, no one answers the phone. When I texted the number I had been given in the voicemail, I received no response there either. After doing my own research, I was given the email address of Sarah in the Animal Resource Center and told she would be the best person to help answer my questions. I emailed her explaining my confusion, concern, and frustration. In response, I was informed that it was actually all five kittens being placed into the TNR program, so clearly the person who called me didn’t even have their information straight. I received a lengthy explanation of general shelter policies and procedures, but my most basic question remained unanswered: Why were these specific kittens deemed unfit for adoption? These were five sweet, healthy kittens that I had held, cuddled, and cared for before bringing them in. I was ultimately told that a “team of veterinarians” had made the decision and that they were sorry I did not like the outcome. When I picked the kittens up, however, I was told something entirely different. The employee who assisted me originally met me at the door and was kind, compassionate, and apologetic. She explained that the decision had not been based on an evaluation of the kittens themselves and that the shelter was simply “full.” When I specifically asked whether the kittens had been evaluated, I was told they had not. Sounds like a whole bunch of lying happened. That conversation left me questioning the information I had been given throughout this process and why direct questions were never answered. But, now I know why. There were no answers because they simply decided the fate of these babies before even spending time with them. I also know for a fact that they were not evaluated because their medical paperwork states that they are all 2.00 lbs exactly, the minimum requirement for spay/neuter. Interesting. I also received a refund of the $300 donation I had made toward the kittens’ care, from the one employee who actually cared. For that, I am grateful, because that money is now going directly toward caring for these kittens while I find them permanent homes. What concerns me most is this: if space was the issue, why was I never offered alternatives? Why wasn’t I asked if I would foster them? Why wasn’t I given options beyond returning them outdoors through a TNR pathway? I understand that shelters are overwhelmed. I understand that resources are limited. What I do not understand is how 9-week-old kittens that could potentially be adopted are best served by being returned outdoors without exploring other solutions?! The good news is that within 24 hours, I have already found homes for 3 of the 5 kittens despite their ear tips, and I am confident I will find loving homes for the remaining two as well. To the employee who showed compassion, honesty, and understanding throughout this process—thank you. Your kindness made an incredibly difficult situation a little easier. As for the kittens, they deserved better. And that’s why I felt compelled to share my experience. These people are deceitful and I cannot recommend them after my experience. Unfortunately, after repeating this story multiple times, I have heard others that are similar. The claim that they “want the best pathway for all animals they have the opportunity to help” is truly a lie.

I went to Charleston Animal Society on Remount Rd today to look at a pup I had seen a couple of times on the website. His name was Carlos and he is a 6 month old Lab mix. My 7 and a half year old Lab mix recently crossed the rainbow bridge. I wasn't certain that I was ready to adopt another dog. After meeting Carlos and feeling the genuine care of the people here, it was an easy decision. We are taking things slowly introducing this gentle pup to his new family. I would highly recommend visiting them if you are considering a new addition to your family.

I got a great companion from them. He sticks to me like glue. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a fur baby.

Such an amazing facility. We have adopted here before, did again today, and will do it again in the future. They explain everything so deeply and answer any and all question you might have. Kai is the one who helped us today and was amazing. Very thankful. 🤍
