Angel Mounds State Historic Site

Good for what it is. They did a good job with the museum incorporating modern tech without it being overwhelming with some hands on items. If you walk the mounds after rain where boots!!

Look I love museums, I came expecting a museum, my expectations did not match reality, thus was a native american cultural center not a museum, if you want to learn about modern native american culture its a great place, but the history of the site is nothing more than a footnote here, it is neglected, there are screens, photos, hardly any historical interpretation, there apparently used to be structures on the site showing you what buildings used to look like, the only one remaining is a wall. So the mounds were interesting, but after visiting, I found videos online about what the museum looked like before and the history. I feel I got more about watching a video going through the old museum than I did physically going through the current cultural center. Again nothing wrong with a cultural center, but this is history, it is a historic site, when I go to a historic site I expect to learn about the history of the site, not about modern culture and how they generally feel about a site, and how they relate to it, its interesting, but it doesn't belong in a museum. Overall, if you want a museum this is not the place for you, it is not a museum, I would not waste the time or the money. If you want to just learn about modern native american tribes then sure you'd like it.

There is both an indoor museum, and a outdoor walking path to all of the mounds. My wife enjoyed the museum, and the informative displays and videos. My son and I ventured into the intense heat to visit the mounds, and we would love to explore them again when the weather is cooler.

We went on a Sunday morning when they opened. There were only a few people there. The visitors center has a lot of information, with some artifacts on display. This is one of the biggest sites in the Midwest to see mounds. The self guided trail is very interesting and gives you a better idea of how the area is set up. Two miles of trails take you through the site. If you are interested in the mound builders' culture, this is one of the best places to go.

This was an impromptu date for my husband & I. It was interesting to see all the history! The museum was closed but we paid $5 & did a self guided tour/walk of the grounds. It is a 2 mile walk total with paths cut in the grass to follow. You also get a pamphlet with a map so you can get a better idea where all the mounds are. Some are small so you don't really SEE then until they are pointed out. Over all, it was a good walk & I loved being able to have a cheap, interesting date with my husband!
