(from Google)The guided tour at Canyon Lake Gorge is an exceptional outdoor experience that perfectly blends geological education with a moderately challenging hike. At $20, the tour is a bargain for the exclusive access it provides. You get to step into the actual gorge—areas restricted to the general public—where the raw power of the 2002 flood is on full display. Having a guide who is witty and knowledgeable transforms the hike into a narrative. He breaks down complex geological pieces and historical events into engaging stories, making the rock formations and fossils come to life. Our tour lasted roughly 2.5 hours. While it is a significant time investment, the pace is steady and the insights gained at each stop make the duration feel much shorter. Because the terrain is exposed, it is highly recommended to go on a cooler day. Bringing your own water and snacks is essential to stay energized throughout the trek.
Fabulous time to ring in 2026 great hike with the family & very educational Joe our Park Ranger very knowledgeable & fun with the dad jokes . Pay for the tour you can walk inside the gorge the self tourism only on the side of the rim but still a good trail paved- take water & hat - our yearly trip every Jan from now on
Husband and I visiting from Florida took a private gorge tour. I had nothing but amazing things to say about it. Our tour guide John was absolutely fabulous! We learned so much and got to see so many cool fossils and some dinosaur tracks. It was a great way to get outside and connect to nature and natures past. Could not recommend the views here more.
Fun, educationa,l and frankly awe inspiring. See the power of water and hear the story of the 2002 storm that caused Canyon Lake to go over the spillway, exposing millions of years of rock layers, fossils, and dinosaur tracks in Canyon Lake Gorge. Mike gave a superb, tour that kept us all informed and entertained. The hike is not difficult and provides an enriching nature experience for all, as well as the importance of water managementin the Hill Country. The Nature Trail is an option if you can't do the full hike. Public and private tours are available. Highly recommended!
I love this spot! I have done the self guided option as well as the 90 minute guided hike. The self guided is an easy trail, under 2 miles round trip. We participated in the scavenger hunt, which was fun. Informative signs at each stop along the trail give you information about what you’re looking at. The guided hike allows you to go down into the gorge and see things up close including dinosaur footprints and Sea creature fossils. We got ranger Joe as our tour guide and he was amazing! Lots of fun jokes to keep things light and fun. I would highly recommend checking this place out!!
