No canopy any where, all trails are graded gravel wide enough to drive a semi down. Random bits of asphalt and road buried under the sand. Its like a snapshot of what the entire state will look like by 2035 when they've developed everything. Might not be bad in winter when lack of canopy doesnt matter as much

Went during Spring Break. Great walk with wide paths. Some sections are very sandy. But the majority of the walk/hike is well packed making for an easy walk. A lot of direct sun.

Five stars for the space, the history, and the conservation success at Golden Aster Scrub Nature Preserve. I hiked the sandy red trail on a beautiful day and it was an amazing workout. This preserve has a lot of room to explore, with multiple trails and varied terrain. As the weather heats up I may not attempt the longer routes again, but for cooler days it’s a fantastic place to roam and experience true Florida scrub habitat. The size of the property really stands out — wide open, expansive, and anchored by two lakes that make the landscape feel even more alive. The story behind this land makes the visit even more meaningful. The preserve is named after the Florida Golden Aster, a rare yellow wildflower once listed as endangered with only a handful of populations remaining in this region. Active land management here — prescribed burns and clearing — helped the species recover and ultimately be delisted. That’s a powerful conservation success. This area also protects ancient scrub ecosystems, remnants of an old coastline from long ago, and provides habitat for species like the Florida Scrub-Jay. Walking the western loop, you can even spot traces of the land’s past as a cattle ranch, a reminder of how this landscape has evolved over time. Golden Aster Scrub feels like a place of both history and possibility — a large, living preserve with room to breathe, roam, and witness Florida’s ecological story still unfolding.

Clean trail. Lots of sand, like a beach amount. Cute wildlife. Calm. Easy, free parking. Would recommend. Views of the water are slightly obscured. Pavilion does not have water view. Thank you Hillsborough for taking care of this trail for the community to enjoy and for nature to be preserved.

Visited for the first time today! Parking is limited but that's fine because it seems rather low-traffic. Signage is a bit unclear; I initially thought they were closed but the entrance for foot-traffic is off to the side. I didn't get to walk the entirety of the property's trails but I did get a decent feel for it. I'm extremely grateful that the county purchased and maintains this habitat. The drive here was kind of soul-crushing seeing miles of new cookie-cutter developments on top of what presumably would've historically been similar to Golden Aster Preserve, so that made it feel all the more meaningful to be there. Unfortunately others don't seem to feel as grateful as there was a fair amount of litter. There were also sadly some prominent invasives, but my understanding is the county has less than 10 people on staff to maintain all of these properties so I understand they're spread thin. More people should get out here and experience what Hillsborough scrub looks like so they have context for what's been lost!
