Slate Canyon Trail

Really neat place. Especially liked the green and purple rock combinations I like to get a chance to go explore it some more sometime soon. We showed up kind of late and ran out of light quickly beautiful overlook It's a nice little hike.

Truly love this trail! Sparsely peopled, but I feel very safe here. also such fun tables, needing to picnic here asap

He don't even have to leave the view of your car in the parking lot to see a lot of nice stuff on this trail. And to reach the Bonneville shoreline trail. Just think if you were on the Bonneville shoreline trail 18,000 years ago you would be on a beach with high waves crashing into the Sandy shore that formed the Bonneville shoreline trail that we know today.

(April 30, 2025. Slate Canyon trailhead to the Y trailhead loop around Maple Mountain) Starts getting quite muddy at 3 miles in. Snow starts at about 3 miles in, but it's pretty hard packed and difficult to post-hole through. I donned my snowshoes at 3.8 miles, and the snow got a lot wetter. I took them off again at five miles, so I'm not sure if the 1.2 miles of snowshoeing was worth the other 6.4 miles of backpacking them around. The view was largely obscured by fog on this rainy day, but the hike was excellent! Very wet and muddy.

I personally love this trail since it’s so close to me. I also enjoy the low traffic, lower and higher trails and great views. It’s especially Pretty in the early summer where there is more green in the mountains. It has a creek running through and in the spring and early summer, it cuts across the trail several times but still easy to cross. Beware of gopher snakes and even mountain lions a few miles in. You can also park here and go north along the Bonneville Shoreline trail across Maple Mtn then connect with the Y Hike. The parking is free there and plenty of it.
