Carpenter Animal Hospital and Pet Inn

We love Carpenter Animal Hospital! We adopted a stray cat (Chief Wellington) who needed a loooot of help with his teeth. Laura helped me get set up with the hospital quickly and Dr. Barrett saw Chief within a week, got me an accurate estimate, and had availability for a dental also within the week! The hospital is clean with a very cute waiting room and is very efficiently run. Would recommend this place to anyone! Happy to have my Chief home and recovering well.

I am leaving this review to document serious continuity-of-care, administrative, and clinical communication concerns we experienced at Carpenter Animal Hospital & Pet Inn while seeking care for our cat with worsening respiratory symptoms. We specifically chose this practice because Dr. Katherine Terrell is listed as a Cat Friendly / Feline VMA veterinarian. Unfortunately, our experience did not reflect the level of coordination, follow-through, or diagnostic advocacy we expected from a feline-focused practice. During our appointment, we raised concerns about the persistence and progression of our cat’s congestion and respiratory symptoms and asked about referral to internal medicine for advanced diagnostics. While Dr. Terrell stated she could submit a referral if we wished, she repeatedly emphasized the cost and time involved and communicated a tone that strongly suggested she did not believe referral was necessary or advisable at that stage. As a result, internal medicine was discouraged rather than actively considered. Dr. Terrell also stated she would place a note in our cat’s file to pre-approve a continuation of Clavamox once our existing prescription (from an emergency hospital) ran out, as she would be out of the office and unavailable. She explicitly instructed us to notify the front desk when we called for the refill. When we contacted the clinic as directed, we were told no such note existed. Staff stated they would contact Dr. Terrell and call us back. Despite multiple calls that morning, we never received a return call. The clinic closed early for Thanksgiving break (despite hours listed until 6 PM on their website and other platforms), and we never received any follow-up — then or afterward. As a result, our cat was left without medication during a period of clinical decline, and we were forced to seek care elsewhere. A subsequent veterinarian listened to our concerns, submitted an urgent internal medicine referral, and advanced imaging ultimately revealed a nasal tumor. While veterinary medicine is complex and diagnoses are not always straightforward, discouraging referral for escalating symptoms, combined with a complete breakdown in promised follow-up and medication continuity, is deeply concerning. We cannot recommend this practice to anyone seeking reliable, coordinated care for a medically complex cat.

Look if your dog has a chronic problem of too much money around. This is the place for you. So far we're about $1,000 in to find out tgey did not have any issues. Also after refusing another $1,000 in diagnostics. The staff is very nice. And they do a lot of good work for the rescues. But just know if you make less than 100k a year this is not the vet for you.

I went there to get traveling documents for my dogs and they charged me over double of what it normally costs in two separate states. I travel consistently with my dogs on an airplane and have to get these documents made 10+ times a year. I am not new to this rodeo.Normally it is 175 per dog; They charged me $261 for the first dog and then, after complaining about the cost, They gave me 50% off the second dog so I only had to pay $171 for that dog. So in total after complaining it was $432. I guess I should be happy. They gave me 50% off the second dog! The vet did tell me that they are going to review the charges for the service because obviously it is out of whack. I am absolutely dumbfounded at this. This is a universal cost and to be charged what I was charged is crazy. Oh-I was just there two weeks before to have the dogs get a full check up so I would have a local vet. I will not be back.

We bring our cats (Sugar, 17 years old, and Oink, 10 years old) to see Dr. Barrett here and he is nothing short of phenomenal. He’s treated both our elderly cats with the care we treat them with ourselves and seems to actually care about them and their wellbeing. He is so helpful when it comes to breaking down the complicated vet med explanations into ways we can actually understand them, which makes hard diagnoses more bearable. We found out today our 10 year old boy has diabetes, and while at a loss for words and in utter disbelief, he assured us we have options and scheduled a time for us to bring our Oink in to go over everything once we’ve wrapped our heads around the initial diagnosis. I cannot recommend Dr. Barrett and the staff at Carpenter enough and have already told all my friends about them. 10/10 every single day of the week.
