Sugar House Vet - Wellness Center

My dogs have had excellent care here over the years. The downside is that they are very expensive.

The staff was excellent and genuinely caring. I was unsure of how my reactive cat would respond to this wellness visit and they truly embodied their motto of being a “no fear clinic.” They entered the room silently, spoke softly and slowly, and completely respected my cat’s boundaries. They never pressured me to accept testing or medications, only recommended what was necessary. Answering all of my questions, caring for my cat, and walking us out of the building (dogs were barking and they wanted to reduce my cat’s stress) is what left me rating the clinic 10/10. I’ve never had a veterinary experience like this.

We recently moved to Sugar House and I chose Sugar House Veterinary Wellness Center as our vet based on reviews and proximity to our house. Our cats and dog are healthy so to establish care we took our cats in for vaccines and a check up. From start to finish our experience was mediocre, starting with the vet tech who insisted that we give our cats the FELV vaccine each year even though she said there is a biennial option. She couldn’t explain why the annual vaccine is better and even the vet didn’t have a good explanation - I had to google to learn why a yearly vaccine is right for our cats. The vet used kind language with the cats but her demeanor was cold and distant and she was borderline aggressive in expressing that one of our cats can never go outside despite me explaining that while our cats have historically been indoor, major lifestyle changes have made keeping them inside impossible. Updating their system during the exam took a strangely long time and none of their notes were available when we went to check-out so we lingered in the lobby with stressed out cats in carriers for longer than was comfortable. The tech and receptionist volunteered that the FELV booster, given two weeks after the initial vaccine, would be free of charge because we wouldn’t need to see the vet and it would be a quick interaction with a tech. I was surprised when I took the cats for their boosters that I had to pay for another round of vaccines. In total, we paid $274 per cat for an exam, FELV vaccine + booster, rabies and distemper shots. Overall nothing about our experience was impressive - the 6 people we interacted with were reasonably professional but none seemed particularly knowledgeable, the systems and processes supporting the business were disjointed and slow, and we were given no reason to want to come back. Many people we’ve met at the dog park are obsessed with their experiences at Holladay Veterinary Hospital so we’ll give them a try for our next medical concern and we’ll likely start getting vaccines at the Humane Society.

Such a happy boy 😁 He got absolutely spoiled with treats, attention, and care. and he absolutely LOVED every minute of it. Feels good to know my anxious fur baby was taken care of and got to enjoy every bit of it. :,)

Dr. Huston and Alyssa were great with handling and examining my cat who is easily stressed and overwhelmed during vet visits! This was our first visit and overall they made a great impression and my cat warmed up to them by the end. I'm happy that they also supported the diet that I'm providing for my cat, which is a combination wet food and freeze dried raw diet (many vets dismiss any mention of raw food in any form). I'll be bringing her to Sugar House for as long as I'm living in the SLC area!
