We had a wonderful long stroll on the beach. We appreciated the free parking access once we realized we needed to buy a permit to drive on the beach. Family and dog friendly. I especially enjoyed the “no drive” area because it was less populated and cleaner. I usually pick up shells when I go for walks on a beach, but this beach was sadly quite littered, so I ended up filling a bag with trash as we walked instead. The microplastics problem was very noticeable compared to the Gulf side of Florida, which is why I give it 4 stars instead of 5.

Just go!! It’s a beautiful beach very relaxing 😎 it can be crowded on the weekends, but very chill during the weekdays.

Padre Island Drive-able Public Beach, just off the coast of Corpus Christi, Texas, is one of the coolest beach destinations in the state. It’s a massive barrier island known for its wide-open beaches, natural beauty, and the unique experience of being able to drive right onto the sand. Unlike many beaches where you have to park and walk, here you can take your vehicle straight onto the shoreline and set up camp for the day—just make sure you’re keeping an eye on the tide. If you park too close to the water during low tide, high tide can creep up faster than you’d expect and leave you in a bad spot. The beaches here are white and soft, with an almost wild, untouched feel. If you head south towards Padre Island National Seashore, the sand gets even whiter, and the water gets noticeably clearer. It’s an awesome stretch for beachcombing, fishing, and just soaking in the Gulf Coast vibes without the heavy crowds you’d find at more commercialized beach towns. Whether you’re cruising down the shoreline, setting up a bonfire, or just kicking back with a cooler and a chair, Padre Island is an underrated destination for what it is—natural, open, and perfect for a laid-back beach day.
