(from Google)When we first walked into District Vet Brookland, it wasn’t for a routine visit. We had just moved into DC and were planning to establish care there in a few weeks. Instead, one morning we woke up to our dog vomiting blood. The kind of moment where your stomach drops. We rushed him in. We were new. We were panicked. We didn’t have an established relationship yet. They saw him immediately. There was no lecture. No guilt. No outrageous first-time fees. No one made us feel irresponsible for not already having a DC vet. They just focused on him and took care of him. A few months later, it happened again. More vomiting. Because of weekend timing, we ended up at an emergency hospital that quoted us $10,000, on top of an additional $5,000 visit fee, for obstruction surgery. I remember sitting there thinking, how is this happening? We love our dog more than anything, but that number felt impossible. The next morning, I called District Vet in tears. I truly thought we might lose him simply because we couldn’t afford an abdominal surgery. Dr. Hassel and the team stepped in immediately. They made room for him that day. They operated that day. They worked with us on cost in a way that felt both compassionate and realistic. But more than the logistics, it was how they treated us that changed everything. They treated us like people who loved their dog. Not like a bill. Not like an inconvenience. When his recovery didn’t go the way any of us hoped, we were there constantly. Almost every day for ten days. Exhausted. Emotional. Trying to stay calm while quietly falling apart. Mindy and Nyah at the front desk answered every anxious call with warmth. They never once made us feel like we were bothering them. And we were calling a lot. Dr. Jordan saw us in a pinch, despite never having treated Herby before, and stepped right in without hesitation. Dr. Makhijani set up a private email chain on her day off to talk through his care and help us think through the decision to do a second surgery. On her day off. That meant more than I can explain. Alondra, the surgical tech, walked us through everything step by step. Xander and Kristin welcomed us every single time we walked through the door, sometimes running from the back room just to see Herby. They made it known that they remembered us, that they knew his case, and that they genuinely cared about our dog. And I know there are a million other names I am probably forgetting. That’s part of what makes this place so special. So many people showed up for us during those weeks, and I wish I could list every single one of them here. What stood out most is that his care never felt siloed. Everyone seemed to know his case. It felt like a team effort. Like they were all quietly invested in figuring this out. There’s a special kind of vulnerability that comes with loving an animal. They can’t tell you what hurts. You hand them over and hope the people caring for them see them the way you do. At District Vet Brookland, we never had to wonder. When he ultimately needed a second obstruction surgery, we were financially and emotionally at our limit. I was terrified to even ask how we would make it work. They made it work. There wasn’t hesitation. There wasn’t pressure. There was just this steady sense that they were going to help us figure it out. Not because it was convenient. Not because it was profitable. But because they cared. In a time when veterinary medicine can sometimes feel transactional, District Vet feels deeply human. They saved our dog. But they also carried us through one of the hardest stretches we’ve had as pet owners. We trust them completely. There is nowhere else we will ever go. — Herby’s very grateful family P.S. For other worried pet parents reading this: Herby now wears a muzzle on walks to stop him from eating things off the street, which was the underlying cause of both events. This was not a failure of the medical team. It was a hard lesson for us as owners, and one we have taken seriously.
I absolutely love District Veterinary Hospital (Brookland). Patient communication is fantastic, I totally trust their techs and vets with my animals, they offer transparent pricing, and the facility is clean and welcoming. They are wonderful. So grateful I found District Vet after hopping around to various practices over the years—this is the first clinic I’ve found that delivers the kind of attention, communication, and compassionate care I want for my pets. It is pricey, but in my opinion well worth it.
District Veterinary Hospital is exemplary in care, customer service, compassion. After not so great experiences with both my dog and cat elsewhere, I switched to DVH and I am overwhelmed with relief that I did so. Dr. Nichols’ is incredible. She approached my reactive dog without fear, a neutral emotional response, and patience. In fact all staff was completely patient, supportive, and understanding through his tantrums and willing to work through it to make it a good experience for my dog. Dr. Nichols’ really took her time assessing my pets and approached her examinations with thorough intellectual curiosity. I always leave feeling like the utmost was done for my pets and without any residual concerns that maybe something was missed. The entire staff, front desk and vet techs alike, are kind, helpful, compassionate, and interested in meeting your furry best friends. Three cheers to District Vet!
We now have all 3 of our pups working with the great vets @ District Vet Brookland. Always greeted with a smile and professionalism. Highly recommended from this Vizsla family!
We’ve taken our fur babies to District Vet for many years. We’ve recently lost our 16.5 year old so, which they helped us navigate with care and compassion. We also took our new puppy to them this week for her first check up. I have to say ~ the staff over the past year is the best they’ve ever been. Highly recommend.
