(from Google)Came here to look for Gull billed Terns, my nemesis Tern that I hadn't seen. Spoiler alert, we saw one 😂 I was kind of sad by how dry it was here, it was shocking. But it is still pretty out here, and made for a nice walk :) It's a great park for birding! Watch out for wild hogs, there were quite a few dirt diggings from them.
I never leave reviews unless I’m particularly impressed or appalled by the place. That being said… WORST trail ever. There was not a soul there, which we initially took as a plus, but soon learned the reason with disastrous consequences. Tried to go for a nice walk with our dog, made it about 20 feet out of the parking lot before we were completely and utterly ASSAULTED with mosquitos. Despite the copious amounts of bug spray we had applied, I’m not exaggerating when I say there were hundreds on each of us. Dog started rolling around on the ground and whining because he was being eaten alive. We ran back to the car and left immediately. As for the trail itself, according to the trail map and our brief encounter, it’s just a semi bush hogged path through nowhere to even more nowhere. Do not visit unless you want to be patient 0 for the next malaria outbreak. Will probably be spending next months rent on anti itching medicine.
The trails were overgrown with the grass being very tall. The trails were also muddy. It was difficult walking along the trails. There is full sun and not much shade. We did see a hawk. Some traffic noise from the roads and air traffic as well. Maybe when the trails are better maintained we will go back. Other trails nearby are nicer for hiking.
It was my first visit to Wolf Branch Creek Nature Preserve and it was underwhelming. If you, you and a partner or your dog want to go for a nice walk this place is great for that but only if you live nearby in my opinion. You may be able to do some bird photography during the spring and summer but you will definitely have to get there early before other people show up and scare the birds away. Not a scenic place so do not go looking to do any worthwhile landscape photography. I believe the longest trail is 1.5 miles and there is a shorter 2nd trail.
Took the red trail, it was very nice. If you hike here definitely bring bug spray.
