(from Google)We come here for the easy access to the Boneville Shoreline Trail. This is one of favorite trails for running. If you head south towards Adam’s canyon and turn around, you hit a little over 3 miles. Just keep an eye out for mountain bikers. Views are excellent with 1 creek crossing.
I love this picnic area and trailhead. I start at this rec sight to hike the Fernwood trail/Bonneville trail. It has an amazing view of the valley. I run and walk my dogs on this trail a lot. I love crossing the water on the rocks and letting my dogs get a drink. This trail runs along the Bonneville Trail line. It’s a little bit more narrow at times so you have to walk single file, but I’m able to walk side by side with my big golden doodles on most of the trail. When you start at Fernwood (just up from the top of Antelope drive) and you walk to trail I until you see the sign that’s about 1.7 miles. The sign is the fork that tells you this is the Bonneville trail line and to the right goes up Adams Canyon (that’s just past the switchbacks going up Adam’s Canyon). This a fairly easy trail. It’s mostly flat with a few hills. It mostly runs all along the mountain side. So the Fernwood trail and back is about 3.4 miles. Depending on the time of the summer, you can be in the shadow of the mountain if you hike by 8 (sometimes earlier). Enjoy your hike! I recommend this trail.
The Fernwood Recreation Site is a small picnic area for daytime use in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, and provides access to the Bonniville Shoreline Trail. There are picnic sites with some having metal stands for stoves, no campfires or charcoals grills allowed. Most paths in the recreation site are paved. Pit toilets are available, with drinking water nearby. The parking lots are small, and some are designated for horse trailer parking for horse back riders. There is a viewing area to look out of the valley and the picnic areas are surrounded by trees. Access to the site is gated with the gates open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., and overnight camping is not allowed.
What a great hike! Easy enough that just about anyone can do it, yet enough of a challenge to keep it fun! It's beautiful any time of year! Dog-friendly, you can hike, bike, or even snowshoe (from what I understand. I've never personally gone snowshoeing)
This was a great hike. Still a little snow and muddy for sure. Beautiful views and the dogs loved it! Just remember to be courteous and pick up after your dogs. I was thanked by another hiker for picking up, because apparently others do not. That was quite apparent as we walked. That takes the beauty away, and who wants dog poop in the soles of your hiking boots or shoes? No one that's who. So peeps, pick up after your dogs or leave them home. That's why only 4 stars, because of people, not the place.
