I do not recommend Marcum Animal Hospital — especially if you have an exotic pet. I specifically searched for a vet that treats exotic animals because I have a chinchilla. Before booking, I called to confirm they see chinchillas and was told yes, so I scheduled an appointment for Friday, April 10 at 5:30 PM. When I arrived, I waited about 40 minutes before being seen. The tech was very kind and thorough, but after that, I waited again for the vet. Based on her experience and what is advertised on their website, I trusted she had the knowledge to treat exotic pets. My chinchilla is 6 years old and has never had any health issues. I brought him in because he was clearly struggling to urinate. I even showed the vet a video where you can hear him crying while trying to go, and when he does, it’s only a very small amount. It was obvious he was in pain and needed help. I explained his diet in detail: timothy hay, Oxbow chinchilla pellets, and bottled water a strict, appropriate diet for chinchillas. She checked for hair rings and found none, then recommended an X-ray, which I agreed to. My chinchilla weighs about 1 lb. I was charged $115 for the X-ray and $70 for the visit. After the X-ray, she said he has a bladder stone and suggested it could be due to his diet, which I know is not accurate given how strict I am with his care. She then made an unnecessary comment about not understanding why people in Florida have pets like this, which was unprofessional and honestly frustrating. We have A/C for a reason. She told me this is common in male chinchillas and that he would need surgery. I asked if there were any non-surgical options, and she said no. She then told me she would call me on Monday, April 13 with more information. It is now April 15, and I never received a call. I had to call them myself. After being placed on hold, I was told the vet “has no answers” and that there is nothing she can do — which completely contradicts what I was told in person about surgery. On top of that, the facility itself did not feel clean, which is very concerning for any medical setting. Even more concerning, a large poodle was allowed to walk into the treatment area while my chinchilla was there. That is completely inappropriate. Exotic animals are easily stressed, and that could have scared him. Also, not every client is comfortable around dogs and why was an unsecured dog allowed to just walk into a treatment room? If this vet does not have the knowledge or experience to treat chinchillas, that should have been made clear from the beginning. I should not have been told they treat exotic pets, charged nearly $200, and then left with no plan, no follow-up, and no real help for my pet who is clearly in pain. This felt extremely misleading and, honestly, like my concern for my pet was taken advantage of. I would not recommend anyone bring their pet here. If I could give this place -5 stars, I would.

I brought my Doberman to Dr. Gideon for an ear crop after we agreed on a price for the procedure. I paid expecting not only the surgery but competent, standard aftercare, because with cropped ears the aftercare is what determines whether the dog heals correctly. I do have a PhD myself, and while I am not a veterinarian, I am trained to read evidence, weigh guidance, and recognize when a professional is refusing to stay aligned with accepted standards. The danger here is not just a cosmetic issue. When posting is done wrong or stopped too early, the ears can heal in a distorted position, the cartilage can set incorrectly, and the dog may need additional corrective work later. That can mean more pain, more risk, more expense, and in some cases a permanent defect that could have been prevented with proper follow through. In week two the posting was not taken high enough, which let the tops curl inward. Then in week three she tried to redo the tops but demanded we stop posting even though the ears were not standing on their own? Note due to her error she also had put weights on the tips to make them droop even more? Reputable guidance for Dobermans shows posting commonly takes three to four months. Her response was to shut down discussion and lean on her years in practice rather than current peer reviewed standards. In any medical field, animal or human, arrogance and refusal to keep learning are dangerous because they replace evidence based care with ego. Time doing something wrong doesn't count as experience. If a vet will not listen, will not recheck their approach against the broader professional consensus, and acts as if decades of experience exempt them from review, that puts the patient at risk. That is why I consider this a failure of aftercare, and why I will not be returning or recommending her for any procedure. I took my pup to two other vets this morning and they all agreed that it's not time and told me horror stories of this vet. Avoid.

I have been going to Dr. Gideon for 30 years now, ever since she opened her door. I would not take my furry family members anywhere else. She is down to earth, kind, and compassionate. She is always up to date on the latest technologies and equipment. Her staff go above and beyond in giving premier customer service.
